This is from a New York Times article titled- "Indian  Affairs Head Reverses Recognition of Oneida Leader". Dated September 26, 1993. New York Times.com

The following are excerpts from this article. This is how it was done to the Oneida Indian Nation in 1993, as reported by the New York Times. And this is how it's still done, this time to the Cayuga Indian Nation in 2023. With the Department of the Interior/Bureau of Indian Affairs deciding who is going to be the federally recognized Leader of the Cayuga Nation, and then appointed "BIA Representative". As you can see, nothing has changed. It's the same BIA game plan- different Indian Nation.

Start of excerpts from New York Times article:

"In a decision that bodes well for the future of New York's only legal gambling casino, the head of Indian Affairs for the Clinton administration has reversed an earlier decision and reappointed Raymond Halbritter as the federally recognized leader of the Oneida Indian Nation."

"In a letter to tribal leaders on friday, Ms. Deer said Mr Halbritter would be recognized as the representative for 'government - to- government relations' on an interim basis for a period of 6 months."

"Mr Halbritter called the decision a wonderful victory for the nation and said he was confident that the bureau would confirm his leadership. Reversal a surprise."

"BIA recognition is important because it implies that the leader has the right to bind the tribe to agreements and control many programs."

"On August 10, her first day as Indian Affairs head, Ms. Deer unexpectedly withdrew the bureau's recognition of Mr. Halbritter's leadership and named Mr. Homer as the new federally recognized leader."

"After Oneidas and political leaders protested, she quickly issued a 45-day stay and appointed a bureau task force to study the issue."

"About 100 Halbritter boosters traveled to Washington last week as he met with the bureau's task force and delivered a survey that he said illustrated overwhelming support for his leadership."

"Mr Halbritter, a Harvard educated lawyer who has been the recognized leader of the Oneidas since 1987, has been the driving force behind Turning Stone, the gambling casino that the tribe opened in July in Verona, N.Y. 20 miles east of Syracuse."

"Mr Homer, a former construction worker is the leader of the tribes more traditional and anti-gambling faction."

"While New York politicians agree that the question of tribal leadership should be decided by Oneidas, they have registered their support for Mr Halbritter."
